The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been floating around cyberspace for a while, but it has just begun to gain momentum as it heads down Rainbow Road toward a release date.
Chris Pratt will play everyone’s favorite Italian plumber in this movie, which was announced way back in the “before times” of 2018. (if that sounds like an oxymoron, then, yep, people have had some things to say about his casting). Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, most known for their work with Cartoon Network, will helm the animated film, a joint effort between Nintendo and Illumination, the studio responsible for the Minions’ wildly and unexpectedly successful run on television. The Super Mario Bros. Movie should, therefore, at the very least, be a colorful adventure.
Everything else we know about Mario’s most recent adventure is listed below.
What is the plot of The Super Mario Bros. Movie?
We truly don’t know this, though. There are many different directions this latest adaptation might take because there are already more than 200 video games (and a few unsuccessful movie attempts) to draw inspiration from. The only true tease we’ve seen thus far is the first-look poster, and information on the movie’s plot has been as shrouded in mystery as Peach’s Castle’s secret passageways.
From behind, we can see Mario admiring Peach’s Castle in what appears to be the Mushroom Kingdom while donning his trademark overalls. A group of Toads and Biddybuds, as well as floating platforms and islands, will be visible to fans of the games which have played them throughout the years.
The poster incorporates a variety of artistic styles. As a possible nod to the franchise’s modest 1985 beginnings, the foreground features pixelated buildings and signage, while the background features more colorful and rounded animation that feels more in keeping with later game releases. We’ll have to wait and see if this is a tribute to the character’s lengthy longevity or an intriguing weaving of realms.
Is a trailer available?
None yet! But the wait won’t be too long. The company tweeted that the company tweeted will reveal the first teaser trailer as part of Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct event at New York Comic Con on October 6 at 9 PM GMT. Live streaming of the event will also be available on their YouTube page.
Chris Pratt, who has previously stated that he won’t be “mamma-mia” and “it’s-a-me” -ing all over the place as Mario, also got involved in exciting fans further. It was announced alongside the movie’s first-look poster. He urged Twitter users to watch the webcast, saying, “This one is VERY special. I can’t wait! Prepare to be astounded!

Who plays the lead role?
The list of people who live in the Mushroom Kingdom is quite extensive (and exclusive). Charlie Day will play the brother role of Luigi opposite Chris Pratt’s Mario, and Anya Taylor-Joy will don a tiara to play Princess Peach. Other actors include Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Jack Black as the obnoxious Bowser.
When does it come out?
The movie’s now-scheduled April 7, 2023, release date was originally planned for December 2022.
