New Gears of War Trademark Filed by Microsoft

Gears of War

The Gears of War franchise hasn’t had a new release in quite some time, but recent events might suggest that there might be some action on that front soon enough. The United States Patent and Trademark Office has received a fresh trademark application from Microsoft for the Gears of War series.

Companies renewing and refiling trademarks for already existing properties is, of course, hardly ever a rare occurrence, but it frequently tends to coincide with upcoming releases and announcements. A remastered Gears of War compilation, akin to Halo: The Master Chief Collection in style, has been previously said to be in the works.

Given that Microsoft has officially referred to recent entries simply as Gears, with titles like Gears 5, Gears Tactics, and Gears POP!, the trademark registration’s reference to the series as Gears of War is undoubtedly intriguing. Of course, job listings have indicated that work on the following mainline Gears game is already underway, but it’s doubtful that it will be released anytime soon. According to reports, The Coalition is working on a number of games, the closest to release being a new IP that will be a smaller, more experimental game.
